The What

Choosing a positive phrase, words, statements, or slogans to live by help with the process of maintaining a positive attitude. A positive phrase or affirmative statement is a set of words that you say to yourself to stay motivated, empowered, and encouraged towards your goal/s. This could be your favorite quote, proverb, spiritual truth, or religious saying that motivates and inspires you to be your best self.

The How

This exercise has been picked from session Developing Positive Attitude and slightly extended in order to give you an opportunity to spend more valuable time on it.

Step #1: For this fun exercise, pick a positive statement or slogan you want to live by for the next 14+ days! You can select from the list below or create your own! You can pick more than one but will be using only one for the first 14 days as an effective way to practice forming long-term habits.

Step#2: Each day for 14 days, rewrite your chosen positive statement.  You can make your phone screen saver your positive statement, or write it in your school notebook, write it on a notecard and place the card on your bathroom mirror, any place where you will see it and be reminded.

Step #3: Each time you pick one statement, journal on your selection by answering the following questions at least once a week:

  • What does the statement mean to me?
  • What are some of the things I can do to honor and implement my chosen statement in my daily life?
  • What are some lessons I have learned from honoring and implementing my statement in my daily life about myself or others?
  • What worked and what didn’t work for me when implementing my statement in my experience?
